Raptly, and with no trace of fear, the ten year old boy watched as an Imperial Samurai reached the small conflict taking place at the base of his tree.

The samurai angled his sword to deflect and moved past a thrusting spear, and then his own sword was moved to the side and a dagger was inserted between the joint of chest and arm. The warrior gave a groan as the dagger slipped through the armor, and he sank to his knees. The battle raged around the man, then the Aizu moved further into the forest and the lone Samurai was left to bleed out his final few moments of life.

The fierce battle having shifted through the forest, the rage and horror moved elsewhere, the Samurai tilted his face upwards. Whether to see the heavens open to receive him, or just to get a final glimpse of sky, the effect was the same–he found himself staring at a ten year old boy. Sokaku had been studying the battle, absorbing the techniques that were being used, and now he was somewhere far beyond technique, he found himself observing the passing of a warrior’s spirit.

Long minutes passed as the two stared at one another, they shared an eternal moment with widening eyes, then the Samurai’s pupils seemed to lose interest, and he gave a final murmur of breath and died. He died in on his knees, proud, not wishing to lay down even in death. Sokaku was amazed at the easy passing of the warrior’s spirit.

Though the dead man had been an enemy, he was still a Samurai, and the boy felt the pride of being a Samurai, too. Then his pride doubled, for not only was he a Samurai, like the dead man kneeling beneath the tree, but he was of the Aizu clan, the fiercest of the Samurai warriors. Through the rest of the day the battle raged, and again and again warriors fought and died, and Sokaku Takeda perched in the tree and watched and learned.
