Watches have become a necessity for everyone; they are no longer just a luxury item. Watches are something that everyone needs to have without any limitations of age or gender. The watch is designed to tell the time, but over the time, it has been widely used as a luxury item as well.
Over time, there have been many advances in watch technology. Traditionally, watches have been in an analogue form. Analogue watches have a numbered dial, and an hour hand along with a hand for minutes, which tells time. In the 1970s, watches with a new kind of display were introduced known as digital watches. A digital watch shows the time simply as a number displayed on the screen, such as 06:30 pm. There is no hour or minute hand, and one does not have to be able to tell time, as you can just see it on the display.
A digital watch works in the same way, as a mechanical watch, but it is powered by electricity. The source of this electricity is a small round battery, which powers the watch. A digital watch has an electronic time base, which is used to tell time accurately.
The display screen uses either light emitting diodes (LED) or liquid crystal display (LCD). The watch has a counter, which works as the gearing mechanism in order to keep a track of the time. The counter produces a sequence of numbers from zero to nine, and displays the appropriate numbers on the screen.
The Pulsar division of Hamilton Watch Company made the first digital watch in the year 1970. As it was a new technology, therefore it was very expensive, and was not affordable by all and sundry. When the production of watches started in bulk in the year 1975, only then it became affordable for everyone. In the beginning, the display screen used to be red, and they were made form the use of light emitting diodes (LED). For viewing the time, you were needed to press down a button.
During the 1980s, the digital watch industry went through drastic changes. The most renowned brand in watches, Seiko, launched a watch with a television screen built in display. Then a renowned Japanese brand, Casio, launched the first digital watch that could translate Japanese words into English, and the other distinguishable feature was that it had a thermometer in it.
Since then, the digital watches went through revolutionary changes. There are even digital watches that enable you to store information like the telephone numbers. There are even some watches with calculators, which enable to carry out both arithmetic, and scientific functions. During the era of 1990s, the digital watches were launched that had the feature of downloading, and storing data form external sources.
Even with all these features, a digital watch cannot be used as a luxury item. Therefore, many world class expensive watch brands have their lines, and range of luxury watches that are analogue. Apart form this factor, the digital watches have enough features, and easy readability that it is still liked, and used by many people.
